The other day, I was watching a real estate reality TV show. There were two new agents on the team: a man and a woman, who were both mentored by another male agent. The guy newbie agent went to their mentor and asked for an opportunity to take on his own listing. So, the mentor brought him to a showing and let him take the lead. He helped him do practice run-throughs, and when his first open house went well, he was given another listing.
The female newbie agent heard about this, and shows up to the second listing, and said she had heard he was getting listings and wondered why they were excluding her.
The coach told her that the guy asked for a chance to take on his own listing and said “Put me in, coach!” but she didn't. That's why he was getting these opportunities and she was not.
This happens in the corporate world ALL THE TIME. I've seen it happen on the teams I've been on firsthand.
As women, we often want management, coaches, and leadership to notice our efforts and that we're ready for a challenge and offer it to us. We want to earn a promotion based on merit. We don't want to have to ask for it.
But you must. Your boss can't read your mind. So, if you want that new challenge, project or promotion, ask for it.
And if you want a script on how to ask for a promotion, I’ve put together the word for word scripts I rely on to ask for a promotion + worksheets on how to prepare.
P.S. If you’re within the first five years of your career and want my blueprint on how to take your career to the next level, I’m sharing everything I wish I knew when I started working at a big 4 accounting firm here.
